Lake Jackson is a shallow, prairie lake on the north side of Leon County, Florida, United States, near Tallahassee, with two major depressions or sinkholes known as Porter Sink and Lime Sink. The lake is located in the Red Hills Region , and has fluctuated from periods of being dry to a maximum elevation of 96 feet (29 m) above sea level.

Lake Jackson Mound site is located on the southern shore of Lake Jackson. Oconi or Ocone was a town in the eastern part of the province. In 1657 the mission San Fancisco de Ocone was recorded in the town. That year the town had one satellite village. [5] A mission church may have been built in Oconi as early as 1612.

The early settlers of Leon County called Lake Lafayette 'Prairie Lake' as it looked much like a prairie during droughts. The lake took its name from the Lafayette land grant, the township (36-square-mile tract) on the north and east side of Tallahassee that was granted by the US Congress in 1824 to General Lafayette in gratitude for his military services in the American Revolutionary War.
