The Education (Northern Ireland) Act, 1978 (Dunleath Act) contained a provision that allowed existing schools to transform to integrated status, but none succeeded. [ 1 ] : 21 Consequently, a group of parents founded Lagan College , a new type of non-sectarian school in September 1981.
Schools must meet a minimum criteria before being granted integrated status. If schools are unable to transform, parents can create a steering group to pursue a grant-maintained integrated school in their area. [2] Usually, schools that "transform" will be considered controlled integrated, while new integrated schools will be grant-maintained.
