Ash and Bea's World Coronation Series battle continues, with Ash bringing out Sirfetch'd. Bea swaps Machamp for Hawlucha and defeats Sirfetch'd with a Sky Attack. Pikachu finishes off Hawlucha with a Thunderbolt but is subsequently taken out by Grapploct. Lucario returns to the battle and avenges Pikachu by knocking out Grapploct.
Ash and Clemont have their first Kalos Region Pokémon battle. Team Rocket is also in the Kalos Region and they try to catch Ash's Pikachu, but they fail, thanks to Froakie, a Kalos Water-Type Pokémon starter who gets badly injured in the process. Ash and the others go to Professor Augustine Sycamore's lab to heal Froakie.
Ash and co. finally arrive at Violet City, where they find a school and he gets asked to give a small talk about Pokémon Training to the kids. However, a kid called Zackie is convinced that Ash's Pikachu is to be his, and when Pikachu runs off, he takes chase with one of Ash's empty Pokéballs.
Soon after, Tapu Koko appears and battles Ash and Pikachu in order to test their ability to use the Z-Ring. Ash and Pikachu manage to unleash the Z-Move "Gigavolt Havoc", but the Z-Crystal shatters after Pikachu's immense release of power. In order to regain the power of Z-Moves, Ash decides to undergo the island challenge.
