Mentor A. Brown, founder of the paper. The paper was founded in 1888, and was first published on October 22, 1888. [2] [3] Its founders included Mentor A. Brown (1853-1932), formerly of the Beatrice Press, and R.H. Eaton, who together organized the Hub Printing Company to publish the paper and to take over the Central Nebraska Press which dated from 1873.
The county was formed in 1856, and was organized in 1870. [3] [4] [5] It was named for President James K. Polk. [6] In the Nebraska license plate system, Polk County is represented by the prefix 41 (it had the 41st-largest number of vehicles registered in the county when the license plate system was established in 1922).
In 1912, Asa B. Wood, owner of the Gering Courier, and Harry J. Wisner purchased both the Herald and Star and consolidated them into a single newspaper under the title of the Star-Herald. The paper's main competitor was the Scottsbluff Republican. The Wood family continued to own a half stake in the newspaper until 1966. [4]
