Worn by samurai and courtiers during the Edo period, the outfit included a formal kimono, hakama, and a sleeveless jacket with exaggerated shoulders called a kataginu. The first instances of kimono-like garments in Japan were traditional Chinese clothing introduced to Japan via Chinese envoys in the Kofun period (300–538 CE; the first part of the Yamato period), through immigration between the two countries and envoys to the Tang dynasty court leading to Chinese styles of dress, appearance, and culture becoming extremely popular in Japanese court society. The kimono is worn wrapped around the body, left side over right, and is sometimes worn layered. Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese artform and craftwork for making braids and cords. [1] [2] In the past, kumihimo decorations were used as accessories for kimono as well as samurai armor. [3] Japanese braiding, as kumihimo is sometimes known in English, is also associated with Shinto rituals and religious services. [2]
Although samurai continued to use both plate and lamellar armour as a symbol of their status, traditional armours were no longer necessary for battle. For this reason, in the Edo period, armour in the style of the revival of the medieval period, incorporating gorgeous ō-yoroi and dō-maru designs, became popular. [24]
