Editing Wikipedia articles using a full-fledged text editor is often more convenient than a web browser's standard text area. Text editors provide facilities that are very useful for writing and editing articles (especially long articles), such as spell checking, search and replace, macros, syntax highlighting, and alphabetic sorting.
Many languages (mostly obscure) were de-supported due to the switch from GeSHi to Pygments for syntax highlighting (phab:T85794). Fallbacks may be added to SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi.compat.php where languages are sufficiently similar. For unsupported commonly used languages, please contribute language definitions to Pygments. There have been a series of discussions on using the feature and it was put back into service on December 1, 2012. Since then only pending changes level 1, affecting the edits of new and unregistered users, is being used. As of January 2017 there has been consensus to drop pending changes level 2, and as a result only level 1 is now used.
