The Whitsunday Islands are 74 continental islands of various sizes off the central coast of Queensland, Australia, 900 kilometres (560 miles) north of Brisbane. [1] The northernmost of the islands are off the coast by the town of Bowen , while the southernmost islands are off the coast by Proserpine .
Marine stingers are found in the waters of the islands between October and May. [2] The region spans from the beaches of Bowen in the north and Laguna Whitsundays in the south. All 74 of the islands are surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef and only eight of them are inhabited. On Whitsunday Island is the six km long Whitehaven Beach. [3]
The island is accessible by boat from the mainland tourist ports of Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour. It contains many popular destinations for both day visitors and overnight sailors, including the magnificent pure-white sands of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, the secure anchorage of Cid Harbour, and the sheltered waterway of Gulnare Inlet.
More recently these islands have increasingly become known as the Whitsunday Islands, and the general area more simply as the "Whitsundays". The Cumberland Islands were grouped into the Whitsunday Group, the Lindeman Group, the Anchor Islands, the Sir James Smith Group and the South Cumberland Islands National Park.
View south of the island. Whitehaven Beach is known for its bright white sand, which consists of 98% pure silica. As silica is not present in local rocks, it is surmised that the sand was brought to the beach by prevailing ocean currents over millions of years.
Whitsundays is an island group locality that consists of the Whitsunday Group of islands. It is in the Whitsunday Region, Queensland, Australia. [2] It is off the Queensland east coast in the Coral Sea, which is a mix of inhabited and uninhabited islands. [3] In the 2021 census, Whitsundays had a population of 2,281 people. [1]
To comply with the Australian place name conventions, Islands should be disambiguated as necessary using name (state) or where there are more one island with that name in that state name (closer locality).
