Finally, having many LaTeX formulas may significantly increase the processing time of a page. LaTeX formulas should be avoided in image captions or footnotes, because when the image is clicked for a larger display or a footnote is selected on a mobile device, LaTeX in the caption or footnote will not render.

  3. Mathematical markup language - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematical_markup_language

A mathematical markup language is a computer notation for representing mathematical formulae, based on mathematical notation.Specialized markup languages are necessary because computers normally deal with linear text and more limited character sets (although increasing support for Unicode is obsoleting very simple uses).

Once a formula is done correctly in TeX, it will render reliably, whereas the success of HTML formulae is somewhat dependent on browsers or versions of browsers. Another aspect of this dependency is fonts: the serif font used for rendering formulae is browser-dependent and it may be missing some important glyphs.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/...

Until bug T263572 is fixed, it will not work in image captions when readers click through to see full-size images. If an inline formula needs to be typeset in LaTeX, keep the height down by using text-style or horizontal fractions: <math> \tfrac 12 x</math> produces and <math>x / 2</math> produces /, but <math> \frac {x}{2} </math> is too tall ...

  9. Help talk:Displaying a formula - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help_talk:Displaying_a_formula

There is at least one OCR tool that can convert a handwritten formula to Latex and other formats. Mathpix allows 10 snips a month free. I don't know enough to edit the body of the Help page (I've not yet used Mathpix so don't know how good it is, and how compatible with Wikipedia, and don't know what else is out there), but I think there should be a Tools section with this sort of information.
