The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a U.S. national lakeshore consisting of 21 islands (Apostle Islands) and shoreline encompassing 69,540 acres (28,140 ha) [1] on the northern tip of Wisconsin on the shore of Lake Superior.
Manitou Camp is a logging and fishing camp started in the 1890s on Manitou Island, part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Today, as historically, Manitou Camp is used as a campground and as a facility for fishing. [1] The 2,350-acre (951 ha) park has picturesque sandstone bluffs and caves and a 1.5-mile-long (2.4 km) sand beach. It encloses unique habitat types including lakeside dunes, sphagnum bogs, and old-growth forest.
The island is located in western Lake Superior off the Bayfield Peninsula, is centered at approximately 46°57'55.77" N 90°39'25.75" W and has a maximum elevation of 728' above sea level. The island has no human inhabitants and is managed by the National Park Service as part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Manitou Camp is on the island.
The community of Red Cliff, the location of tribal offices and businesses, is three miles (4.8 km) north of the city of Bayfield, a popular tourist community adjacent to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. [4] Frog Bay Tribal National Park (FBTNP) is located in Red Cliff. It is the first Tribal National Park in the United States.
