When doing long division, keep the numbers lined up straight from top to bottom under the tableau. After each step, be sure the remainder for that step is less than the divisor. If it is not, there are three possible problems: the multiplication is wrong, the subtraction is wrong, or a greater quotient is needed.
Long division is the standard algorithm used for pen-and-paper division of multi-digit numbers expressed in decimal notation. It shifts gradually from the left to the right end of the dividend, subtracting the largest possible multiple of the divisor (at the digit level) at each stage; the multiples then become the digits of the quotient, and the final difference is then the remainder.

For division to always yield one number rather than an integer quotient plus a remainder, the natural numbers must be extended to rational numbers or real numbers. In these enlarged number systems , division is the inverse operation to multiplication, that is a = c / b means a × b = c , as long as b is not zero.
If the thousands digit is even, the number formed by the last three digits must be divisible by 16. 254,176: 176. If the thousands digit is odd, the number formed by the last three digits must be 8 times an odd number. 3408: 408 = 8 x 51. Add the last two digits to four times the rest. The result must be divisible by 16. 176: 1 × 4 + 76 = 80.
