The county seat is Eastland. [2] The county was founded in 1858 and later organized in 1873. [3] It is named for William Mosby Eastland, a soldier during the Texas Revolution and the only officer to die as a result of the "Black Bean executions" of the Mier Expedition. Two Eastland County communities, Cisco and Ranger, have junior colleges.

The Leon is formed by the confluence of its North, Middle, and South Forks in Eastland County. The Leon River flows about 185 miles southeast, before it joins the Lampasas.
