I’ve hunted with slugs for more than 20 years. The regular 2 3/4” Remington slugger will kill a hog deader than disco at normal slug distances. (75 yards and under) Remington also has specific hog slugs out. You can read up on them on Remington’s website.

    25. Location. MT. mtmuley said: Slugs work well on elk. I've killed two with a 12 gauge. Distance depends on your set-up. I used a smoothbore 870, but with a scope. 50 yards is max for this combo, at least for me. Some of the dedicated rifled slug guns can really increase the range.

Joined. Jan 19, 2014. Messages. 1,376. Like the title says, Lightfield is no longer making hunting ammunition. I have a first production run of a Browning 12 guage A-bolt shotgun with a twist rate of 1:32. The newer models are now made with a 1:28 to better support the increased velocity of today's sabot slugs.

A Savage 220 (20 gauge) or 212 (12 gauge) run cirlces around any ML. My Savage 220 pushed a 275grain solid copper tipped slug at 1900 FPS (interstingly enough that is the exact velocity I am getting with my current pet ML load with 270grain slugs) it shot well under 2MOA, and held three shells. The 12 gauge pushes 300gr around 2000 FPS.

Location. New Jersey. With the Savage 220, you can definitely extend your range a bit more than 150 yards, a hunting buddy of mine has one and I've seen him take a few deer with it in the 200 yard range. I believe the furthest shot was 210 yards the one year. He use the 3" Remington Accutips as well.

  8. Is there a good scope you like for your shotgun with a cantilever...

About $700 and she's a 20 gauge. How is the recoil as compared with a typical .308 bolt action rifle? I think now a serious slug gun is a must have in shotgun-only deer states and in states where rifles are banned on most public access hunting lands for big game. Would my Leupold RIFLE scope be safe perched on top of that Savage 20 gauge slugster?

  9. Who regularly hunts deer with a shotgun? - Hunt Talk

But the slug’s energy dissipates rapidly along its trajectory. Any shot 35 yards is a long one for 20-gauge with rifled slugs. The 12-gauge, with a muzzle velocity of 1,600 feet per second, develops a walloping 2,485 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle, at 75 yards the slug still rips along with 1,040 foot-pounds of energy.

3,307. Location. Frigid Ohio. I have absolutely No qualms with the 20ga, as long as it shoots an appropriate group. It has more than enough energy and makes BIG holes ! Big holes in bears are your friend. Plus this: Momentum. 30/06 180gr @ 2600= 69. 20ga 3/4oz slug @ 1600= 75.

A 12ga hits no harder than a 20ga does, it can just throw more shot. A tighter choke does not necessarily mean a better, tighter pattern. (given any particular load) Smaller shot size won't guarantee a denser pattern. So, with that said, hit the pattern board and find what works out of your shotgun.
