I’ve hunted with slugs for more than 20 years. The regular 2 3/4” Remington slugger will kill a hog deader than disco at normal slug distances. (75 yards and under) Remington also has specific hog slugs out. You can read up on them on Remington’s website.

I have a first production run of a Browning 12 guage A-bolt shotgun with a twist rate of 1:32. The newer models are now made with a 1:28 to better support the increased velocity of today's sabot slugs.
A Savage 220 (20 gauge) or 212 (12 gauge) run cirlces around any ML. My Savage 220 pushed a 275grain solid copper tipped slug at 1900 FPS (interstingly enough that is the exact velocity I am getting with my current pet ML load with 270grain slugs) it shot well under 2MOA, and held three shells. The 12 gauge pushes 300gr around 2000 FPS.
Nevada. I've used 5's or 6's with the modified choke on my 12 ga. which is the gun I use for everything. I have also shot chukars with 7 1/2 shot as well because we ran into them while quail hunting. Oct 10, 2020.
Location. New Jersey. With the Savage 220, you can definitely extend your range a bit more than 150 yards, a hunting buddy of mine has one and I've seen him take a few deer with it in the 200 yard range. I believe the furthest shot was 210 yards the one year. He use the 3" Remington Accutips as well.
About $700 and she's a 20 gauge. How is the recoil as compared with a typical .308 bolt action rifle? I think now a serious slug gun is a must have in shotgun-only deer states and in states where rifles are banned on most public access hunting lands for big game. Would my Leupold RIFLE scope be safe perched on top of that Savage 20 gauge slugster?
But the slug’s energy dissipates rapidly along its trajectory. Any shot 35 yards is a long one for 20-gauge with rifled slugs. The 12-gauge, with a muzzle velocity of 1,600 feet per second, develops a walloping 2,485 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle, at 75 yards the slug still rips along with 1,040 foot-pounds of energy.

A 12ga hits no harder than a 20ga does, it can just throw more shot. A tighter choke does not necessarily mean a better, tighter pattern. (given any particular load) Smaller shot size won't guarantee a denser pattern. So, with that said, hit the pattern board and find what works out of your shotgun.
