The topic of the article must be notable: it must have in-depth coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the topic. If you are connected to the topic, don't write about it. Find another topic instead. Make sure there isn't already an article about the topic. The article you write must include citations to the sources you used.
If your chosen article is in a grey area -- that is, if some people might not be persuaded that it’s notable -- it will make a very challenging task for a new contributor, and you may wind up spending more of your energy arguing for the article’s existence, than actually writing the article!
Vital articles are articles deemed most important to improve to the highest quality standard on Wikipedia (featured article status). There are five levels of vital articles categorized by subject. If you find an article you believe could be vital, check the talk page for a banner that mentions whether the subject is vital or not.
An article on discussing the differences between you and your close friends. It does not matter to most people in the world. An article about how Tyson Foods is run by a bunch of chicken fuckers because the main article is protected from vandalism by the legions of Internet trolls. The article is reasonably well-written – the prose contains no major grammatical errors and flows sensibly, but it does not need to be "brilliant". The Manual of Style does not need to be followed rigorously. The article contains supporting materials where appropriate – illustrations are encouraged, though not required.

Articles start with a lead section (WP:CREATELEAD) summarising the most important points of the topic.The lead section is the first part of the article; it comes above the first header, and may contain a lead image which is representative of the topic, and/or an infobox that provides a few key facts, often statistical, such as dates and measurements.
A Wikipedia essay may be written by anyone. Before creating an essay, it is a good idea to check if similar essays already exist. Check the "see also" section of relevant guidelines and related essays, or perform a search of Help and Project pages.
