Sodium hydrosulfide is the chemical compound with the formula NaSH. This compound is the product of the half-neutralization of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). NaSH and sodium sulfide are used industrially, often for similar purposes. Solid NaSH is colorless. The solid has an odor of H 2 S owing to hydrolysis by ...
Ammonium hydrosulfide, a component of "stink bombs" has not been isolated as a pure solid. Some compounds described as salts of the sulfide dianion contain primarily hydrosulfide. For example, the hydrated form of sodium sulfide, nominally with the formula Na 2 S · 9 H 2 O, is better described as NaSH · NaOH · 8 H 2 O.
Sodium sulfide is a chemical compound with the formula Na 2 S, or more commonly its hydrate Na 2 S·9H 2 O.Both the anhydrous and the hydrated salts in pure crystalline form are colorless solids, although technical grades of sodium sulfide are generally yellow to brick red owing to the presence of polysulfides and commonly supplied as a crystalline mass, in flake form, or as a fused solid.
Hydrogen sulfide (sulfane) – H 2 S; Pyrosulfuric acid – H 2 S 2 O 7; Sulfamic acid – H 3 NO 3 S; Sulfur dibromide – Br 2 S; Sulfur dioxide – SO 2; Sulfur hexafluoride – SF 6; Sulfur tetrafluoride – SF 4; Sulfuric acid – H 2 SO 4; Sulfurous acid – H 2 SO 3; Sulfuryl chloride – SO 2 Cl 2; Tetrasulfur tetranitride – S 4 N 4 ...
Sodium polysulfide is a general term for salts with the formula Na 2 S x, where x = 2 to 5. The species S x 2−, called polysulfide anions, include disulfide (S 2 2−), trisulfide (S 3 2−), tetrasulfide (S 4 2−), and pentasulfide (S 5 2−).
It is produced through the reaction between elemental sulfur and sodium hydrosulfide in alcoholic solution: [3] 2NaSH + 4 S → Na 2 S 4 + H 2 S. The polysulfide anions adopt zig-zag chains of sulfur atoms. The S-S distances are about 2.05 Å and the S-S-S-S dihedral angles are around 90°. [4]

The structure has been examined by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The dithionite dianion has C 2 symmetry, with almost eclipsed with a 16° O-S-S-O torsional angle. In the dihydrated form (Na 2 S 2 O 4 ·2H 2 O), the dithionite anion has gauche 56° O-S-S-O torsional angle. [1]
