The fact that, of all the priests, it was Zakariya who was given the duty of keeping care of Mary (Maryam) shows his status as a pious man. Zakariya is frequently praised in the Qur'an as a prophet of God and righteous man. One such appraisal is in Surat Al-An'am:
Zakariya's wife was barren and therefore the birth of a child seemed impossible. [9] As a gift from God, Zakariya was given a son by the name of Yāhya, a name specially chosen for this child alone. In accordance with Zakariya's prayer, God made Yahya and Isa, who according to tafsir ( exegesis ) was born six months later, [ 10 ] to renew the ...
Zechariah (Hebrew: זְכַרְיָה Zəḵaryā, "remember Yah"; Greek: Ζαχαρίας; Zacharias in KJV; Zachary in the Douay–Rheims Bible; Zakariyya (Arabic: زكريا, romanized: Zakariyyā) in Islamic tradition) is a Jewish figure in the New Testament and the Quran, [3] and venerated in Christianity and Islam. [4]
It also mentions that people called her a "sister of Aaron (Harun)" [8] Her mother, mentioned in the Quran only as the wife of Imran, prayed for a child and eventually conceived. [9] According to al-Tabari, Mary's mother was named Hannah (Arabic: حنة), and Imran (Arabic: عمران), her husband, died before the child was born. [10]
God cured Elizabeth's barrenness and granted Zachariah a son, Yahya (John the Baptist), who became a prophet. [11] God thus granted the wishes of the couple because of their faith, trust and love for God. In the Qur'an, God speaks of Zachariah, his wife, and John, and describes the three as being humble servants of the Lord:
Zechariah as depicted by James Tissot. The Book of Zechariah introduces him as the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo. [2] The Book of Ezra names Zechariah as the son of Iddo, [3] but it is likely that Berechiah was Zechariah's father, and Iddo was his grandfather. [4]
However, the prophet Zechariah is listed as the son of Berechiah and some therefore make this identification. The Book of Zechariah is commonly dated to c. 520–518 BC, several hundred years after the reign of Jehoash of Judah, and in this interpretation Zechariah is chronologically the last of the martyrs.
