West Caribbean Airways S.A. (abbreviated as WCA) was a commercial airline founded in December 1998 with its headquarters at Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellín, Colombia [1] after moving there from San Andres Island in 2001. It began operating in November 1999 and ceased operations in September 2005.
The aircraft involved in the accident was a McDonnell Douglas MD-82, originally delivered to Continental Airlines in 1986 as N72824. It was put into storage for 3 years, and then sold to West Caribbean in early 2005. [11] The captain of flight 708 was 40-year-old Omar Ospina, and the first officer was 21-year-old David Muñoz.
This crash further worsened the already critical situation that had been facing West Caribbean Airways. Only 5 months later, the airline suffered another fatal and even deadlier accident on 16 August 2005, when Flight 708, a McDonnell Douglas MD-82, crashed in Venezuela killing all 160 people on board which further worsened the company's image.
Caribbean Airlines was incorporated in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on 27 September 2006.. In September 2006, following the recommendation of Peter Davies, the CEO of BWIA West Indies Airways, Caribbean Airlines got approval from the Trinidad and Tobago government to begin operations, after the failed negotiations between the unions and the management of its predecessor, BWIA.
