It is the direct successor to the Rowing Association of American Colleges, the first collegiate athletic organization in the United States, [2] which operated from 1870–1894. The IRA was founded by Cornell , Columbia , and Penn in 1894 and its first annual regatta was hosted on June 24, 1895.
Elite level events were added to Club Nationals in 2016 and the Elite Championship regatta was eliminated. The name of the regatta was changed to "National Championships" in 2019 to reflect the inclusion of elite events, and the regatta was expanded from five to six days. [4] In 2021, the name was changed to "Summer National Championships."
