John Macarthur was born at Stoke Damerel near Plymouth, England in 1767.His exact date of birth is unknown, but his baptism was registered on 3 September 1767. [2] He was the second son of Alexander Macarthur, who had fled Scotland to the West Indies after the Jacobite rising of 1745 before returning to Plymouth to work as a linen draper and mercer.
William Daryl Hine (February 24, 1936 – August 20, 2012) was a Canadian poet and translator. A MacArthur Fellow for the class of 1986, Hine was the editor of Poetry from 1968 to 1978. [ 1 ] He graduated from McGill University in 1958 and then studied in Europe, as a Canada Council scholar.
"The New Colossus" is a sonnet by American poet Emma Lazarus (1849–1887). She wrote the poem in 1883 to raise money for the construction of a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World).
