Rindge was born Rhoda May Knight in 1864, the eighth child of James and Rhoda Roxanna Lathrop Knight. [1] [24] She grew up on a sheep farm outside Trenton, Michigan with 12 siblings. Adamson was born Rhoda Agatha Rindge, the middle child of Rhoda May Knight Rindge and Frederick Hastings Rindge, [11] transplants to California from Michigan and Massachusetts, respectively. There, he was successful in various business ventures, including founding the Conservative Life Insurance Company and the Los Angeles Edison Electric Company. In 1892, Henry Keller sold the 13,000-acre (53 km 2) Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit or 'Rancho Malibu' to Rhoda May Knight Rindge and Frederick H. Rindge, for a price variously reported as $10-$22 per acre. Keller, it is said, had acquired it for 10 cents an acre in 1854.
