On July 7, 2011, the league announced the affiliation system for the season. Five teams, the Austin Toros, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Texas Legends and the Tulsa 66ers, continued their single-affiliation partnerships with their parent teams.
Initially planned to being independently owned and operated by the league, Southwest Basketball, LLC, operated by owner David Kahn, purchased the Altitude and relocated the franchise to Tulsa. The franchise also rebranded and was renamed to the Tulsa 66ers, in honor of the U.S. Route 66 which runs through the city and the state of Oklahoma. [5]
This rule applies for three Tulsa 66ers players, Ryan Reid, Robert Vaden and Latavious Williams, whose draft rights are still held by the Oklahoma City Thunder, the NBA affiliate of the 66ers. A D-League player is usually signed to a 10-day contracts, a short-term contract which lasted ten days and are available to be used starting January 5.

Jan. 20, 2014 - Rodney Bartholomew of the Tulsa 66ers was today named NBA Development League Performer of the Week for games played Monday. Bartholomew, a 6–8, 235-pound forward from Indiana Tech led Tulsa to a 2–0 record last week, including back-to-back road wins over the Bakersfield Jam and Los Angeles D-Fenders.
