KTU was established by the Government of Kerala through an Ordinance on 21 May 2014. [7] Kuncheria P. Isaac, a former Member Secretary of the All India Council for Technical Education, was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of the university on 1 September 2014, and M. Abdul Rahman, former All India Council for Technical Education Director, was appointed as the first Pro-Vice-Chancellor. [8]
In 1997, the University began with a "solo block" structure and a small number of students. However, it has recently expanded in terms of student population, programs, faculties, and infrastructure development. The University now has five (5) faculties and one institute, with approximately eight thousand (8,000) students. [5]

By foreign investment fund, six specialized technical colleges had been established since 1970s by the imperial government. The first university outside AAU is Haramaya University, founded in 1953. A secondary campus, located 12 km from the main site, was developed to house the Faculty of Education, which offers programs across a wide range of teaching disciplines. Recent expansions include the establishment of the Faculties of Communication and Dentistry, demonstrating KTU's ongoing development and commitment to academic diversity.
