Per MOS:RADICAL, <math>...</math> markup is generally preferred to render expressions using the radical symbol √, but it does not work with the Media Viewer extension, which is used to view images full-screen on mobile devices. So this template should only be used in image captions until T263572 is fixed.

The symbol was first seen in print without the vinculum (the horizontal "bar" over the numbers inside the radical symbol) in the year 1525 in Die Coss by Christoff Rudolff, a German mathematician. In 1637 Descartes was the first to unite the German radical sign √ with the vinculum to create the radical symbol in common use today. [3]

There are two CJK radicals blocks: the "Kangxi Radicals" block that includes the 214 standard radicals used in the Kangxi Dictionary; and the "CJK Radicals Supplement" block that includes 115 radical components used in other modern dictionaries, including simplified Chinese and Japanese radicals forms.
