The Graduate Theological Union (GTU) is a consortium of eight private independent American theological schools and eleven centers and affiliates. Seven of the theological schools are located in Berkeley, California. The GTU was founded in 1962 and their students can take courses at the University of California, Berkeley.
By mid-2024, several more institutes had been accredited at ATS. They included Kairos University which was founded in 2021 by Sioux Falls Seminary, South Dakota, Evangelical Theological Seminary Pennsylvania, Houston Graduate School of Theology Texas and Taylor College and Seminary in Edmonton, Alberta. The Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute (PAOI) is a member of the Graduate Theological Union, [1] an ecumenical and interfaith consortium of nine independent seminaries and ten affiliated centers based in Berkeley, California. The institute is a unique, independent, not-for-profit teaching and research institution. [2]
New College Berkeley was an independent, degree-granting institution for more than ten years. It acquired WASC candidacy in 1988 and in 1993 became an affiliate of Berkeley's Graduate Theological Union. Since 1994, all for-credit courses are under the umbrella of the GTU, through whose catalog such courses are offered every semester.
In collaboration with the Graduate Theological Union, PLTS offers two degrees: Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy or Theology. The seminary serves all of the ELCA and has specific ties to Regions 1 and 2 and the eleven synods of the western U.S. PLTS was founded to meet the missional needs of the Lutheran Church in the western United States.
In 1966, the BCA purchased a building in Berkeley to house the study center. With support of BCA Bishops Shinsho Hanayama and Kenryu Tsuji, the IBS incorporated with the State of California as a graduate school and seminary in 1969. Under the direction of Bishop Seigen Yamaoka, in 1985 IBS became an affiliate of the Graduate Theological Union.
