A reamer is a type of rotary cutting tool used in metalworking. Precision reamers are designed to enlarge the size of a previously formed hole by a small amount but with a high degree of accuracy to leave smooth sides. There are also non-precision reamers which are used for more basic enlargement of holes or for removing burrs.
Rotary assemblies [2] are commonly used where formations are predictable and the rig economics are an issue. In such an assembly the weight of the drill collars gives the BHA the tendency to sag or flex to the low side of the hole, collar stiffness length and stabiliser diameter and placement are engineered as a means of controlling the flex of the BHA.
Pipe ramming (sometimes also called pipe jacking) is a trenchless method for installation of steel pipes and casings. Distances of 30 m (150 feet) or more and over 500 mm (20 inches) in diameter are common, although the method can be used for much longer and larger installations.
Reaming itself can be conducted either in an existing borehole ("pilot reaming") or during the drilling operation ("reaming while drilling"). Underreaming is primarily used to allow a wider clearance for running and cementing the casing correctly, either due to restrictions (swelling shales, tortuosity) or to be able to run a larger casing size.

Size of circulation passage through the center of the body of the reamer typically range from 1 1/2" to 3 1/4" in diameter. The body size on the necks beyond the area where the rollers are mounted typically range from 4 1/8" to 11" in diameter.
