Battling Tops is a children's game invented by Eddy Goldfarb [1] and first manufactured by Ideal in 1968. In the game, players launch spinning tops into an arena with the aim to have the final standing spinning top. The game has similarities to gasing pangkah, a traditional Malay sport. [2]
Players wrap their tops in thin, 60-cm long cords which they use to launch the tops onto the playing surface of a canvas fabric sheet partially stretched over a bucket or similar items. The winner is the player whose top spins the longest or successfully knocks the opponent's top out of the playing area.
Eddy Goldfarb (born Adolph Goldfarb; September 5, 1921) is an American toy inventor.The creator of over 800 toys, [1] he is best known for inventing Yakity Yak Talking Teeth, Battling Tops, KerPlunk, Stompers, and Vac-U-Form.

Both the toys and their names were inspired by the Beigoma, a traditional Japanese spinning top.The concept is similar to Battling Tops, a spinning top game developed in 1968, and to the traditional spinning top games of gasing pangkah and pambaram and the previous Japanese toy line of Spin Fighters (1993–1997).
