The High School is closest to Newlands Avenue and also hosts a number of sports fields for the various sports which the school offers throughout the year. The swimming pool is mainly used for Water Polo, and is also heated to facilitate training and usage in winter. The High School has a Media Centre with air-conditioned computer labs and library.
The tradition of boarding at Jan van Riebeeck High dates back to 1953 with the construction of the Huis Jordaan, the then girls hostel, on the school campus, after the Cape Town Administrator and its executive committee decided to make funds available for the construction of residences for the school in 1950.
The school was established in 1827, as a school catering for children from SubA (Grade 1) to Standard 10 (Grade 12). In 1955 the primary section of the school (SubA to Standard 5) split off to become a school separate from the High school on a separate premises, called Durbanville Primary.
