Classes 1A, 2A, 3A, and 5A have the UIL State marching contest on odd numbered years, 4A and 6A have it on even numbered years. This process is very rigorous and extremely tough to break through as bands endeavor to advance from Region to Area to State.
For marching band, schools compete against other schools in the same UIL conference. The 33 regions are grouped into nine areas (named A-I) for Conferences 5A and 6A, and five areas (A-E) for Conference 4A and down. All schools of all conferences compete in region, area, and state competition annually as a fall semester activity.

The 2006 finals marked the 20-year anniversary of the KMEA state marching band championship. 5A was solely a two-band race between Dunbar and Lafayette, many felt Lafayette's time had ended and given way to Dunbar's new era. However, after losing semifinals, Lafayette pulled ahead of Dunbar by 2.5 points and won its fourteenth title.
