Delonix regia is a species of flowering plant in the bean family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae native to Madagascar. It is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of orange-red flowers over summer. In many tropical parts of the world it is grown as an ornamental tree. It is a non-nodulating legume.
The stems and tiny oval leaves are bright green. It flowers profusely, with small, decumbent red flowers, earning the plant the common name 'firecracker fern' as it gives the impression of a bush set ablaze. It can bloom year-round in tropical and subtropical climates, such as USDA Hardiness zones 9-10, and above. [2]
The colors range from the common pink to white with shades of yellow in the centre of the flower.
