Re: Must have non bard, for bard spells? Again, using find steed to double line/cone spells is rules abuse and liable to cause injury by flying DMG. The proper use for find steed is to combine it with all the interesting buffs you can get as a bard, because apparently it never occurred to the designers that classes other than paladins would get ...
So, Valor Bard is proficient with shields. That means, from a rules perspective, he can use them. However, I'm not sure it means he can use them, that is to say, equipping a shield as a bard seems like a hard downgrade. It occupies a hand, and you need a free hand to cast spells.
These are just some ideas of fun bard spells: Level 1: Disguise Self, Dissonant Whispers, Healing Word Level 2: Heat Metal, Hold Person, Invisibility, Suggestion Level 3: Hypnotic Pattern Level 4: Dimension Door, Greater Invisibility, Polymorph These spells are by no means a comprehensive list.
While Bard, Sorceror and Warlock provide more spells known per level, Paladin spells are generally much better (often worth 2.5-3 spells known IMO). The biggest argument for a cha-basted caster multiclass in a Paladin 6+ build is to open up 1st level spell Paladin prepared spells for even better higher level Paladin spells.
Re: Best Spells for Lore Bard to Take at 6th level Aura of vitality and find steed are both weak choices now with healing spirit and find greater steed in XGtE. Quick Navigation D&D 5e/Next Top
The best spells are the same as wizard spells mostly. Illusions, glitterdust, haste. The difference is the stuff bard gets early, like heroism, and bard only stuff, like glibness. Single target enchantments are nice too with a ton of clever work and preparation: bringing a charmed friend to another fight, trickery, etc.
None of our spells over 5th level can come from any list but the bard list, and our spells known drops two spells, to 16. Tertiary casters count as level 15, half casters count as level 16 12 Bard/8 X – We lose access to 7th level spells, our 7th level slot if our second class is a non-caster, and another spell known.
Bard 20 is nice, but waiting till' level 10 for more Expertise hurts. Also, I find the Bard's capstone to be one of the worst. Languages are cool, but too campaign-dependant to be analyzed: I've been in a campaign where we used nothing but Common, and others were people were swinging 6+ languages.
So I came to this forum asking what would be some good offensive spells I could learn as a bard. These could Include damaging spells as well as charm spells I could use to disable enemies. The main spells I'm looking at are dissonant whispers, Rautholms Psychic Lance when I reach 7th level, and Animate Objects when I reach 9th.
The 5e Bard stays true to the classic archetype, providing a powerful caster who can hold their own in close combat, and a damned fine skill monkey to boot. Of course, apart from the mechanical aspects, the Bard is a class that demands to be roleplayed. Its spells demand that you think creatively.
