In 1968, a coup d'état took place in the country, with the new government proclaiming the People's Republic of the Congo a year later. By doing so, it became the first Marxist–Leninist country in Africa. [4] In order to symbolize the revolutionary change, the regime instituted a new national anthem and chose a new flag. [5]
The flag changed again when the country was renamed Zaire in 1971. The Zairean flag used Pan-African colours and it featured a light green flag emblazoned with a yellow circle containing an arm holding a red torch which symbolised the spirit of revolution and the lives of dead revolutionaries. [6]
