Camp Hansen is a United States Marine Corps base located in Okinawa, Japan. The camp is situated in the town of Kin , near the northern shore of Kin Bay, and is the second-northernmost major installation on Okinawa, with Camp Schwab to the north.

The battalion was activated on 1 October 1990 at Marine Corps Camp Courtney, Okinawa, as the 3d Intelligence Company, 3d Surveillance, Reconnaissance, Intelligence Group under the command of the III MEF. In December 1990, it was relocated to Camp Hansen. During June 1995, it was reassigned to Headquarters and Service Battalion at the III MEF.

With the outbreak of the Korean War the battalion was reactivated at Camp Pendleton on 5 March 1952. In August 1953, the battalion sailed for Yokohama, Japan for service with the 3rd Marine Division at Camp Fuji. In February 1956, the 3d Tank Battalion was relocated to Okinawa and the following year moved to Camp Hansen, Okinawa.
