Upon reaching the leader, Tatsumi, Himura has reached his limit and can temporarily neither see (blinded by exploding sulphur) nor hear. As Tatsumi is about to kill Himura, Tomoe intervenes by restraining Tatsumi. Unaware that Tomoe was right in front of him, Himura deals a death blow, killing Tatsumi as well as fatally wounding Tomoe.
