The station was previously known as Interlaken Zollhaus. The town has one other station, Interlaken West. [1] Interlaken Ost is an important railway junction at the meeting point of three railway lines, the Thunersee line of the BLS AG, the Brünig line of the Zentralbahn, and the Bernese Oberland railway (BOB).
Post bus services connect Lauterbrunnen station to other local places, including a half-hourly service to Stechelberg via the Trümmelbach Falls. [7] A large multi-story car park is situated to the east of station, intended for the use of travellers to the car free resorts of Wengen and Mürren, who must complete their journey by train. [8]

In 1943, Piazzale di Besso was created to the west of the station. [9] The Lugano tramway closed in the 1950s. The Lugano–Tesserete railway closed in 1967, and the site of its station is now occupied by the regional bus stop and turning circle at the northern end of the station forecourt.
It opened in 1999 as Malpensa Aeroporto, as the then western terminus of the Busto Arsizio–Malpensa Airport railway, and is managed by Ferrovienord. [1] In 2016, following the 3.4 kilometer railway extension to Terminal 2, the station was renamed Malpensa Aeroporto Terminal 1. [2] [3] [4]
