The Lost Creek Wilderness is a 119,790-acre (485 km 2) wilderness area located in central Colorado in Jefferson and Park counties, south of the town of Bailey. The area is situated entirely within the boundaries of the Pike National Forest. The Lost Creek Scenic Area is a 16,798-acre National Natural Landmark within the Wilderness.
A short 0.4-mile (0.64 km) trail, Bear Creek Trail, provides a trail from the eastern edge of the park at 8th Street to the Pikes Peak Greenway in the Power Plant Reach. [9] [10] Trails can be accessed at the nature center, picnic pavilions or the 21st Street trail parking lot. [3]
Austin Bluffs, Pulpit Rock, and University Park open space areas make up the 585.5-acre (236.9 ha) Austin Bluffs Open Space area. There are trails throughout the area, but the most developed trails are near Pulpit Rock. Trailheads are located off Rockhurst Boulevard and N. Nevada Avenue. [21]
Last week I mentioned I was on a road trip. Well this week I arrived at my destination: Colorado Springs. This city, with over 486,000 residents, lies at the foot of the eastern Rocky Mountains.
Pike National Forest is the western portion of Cheyenne Mountain and much of the rest of the Pikes Peak mountainous area. Colorado Springs is 70 miles south of Denver, which has the largest population of any city in Colorado. Colorado Springs has the largest area of any city in the state, with 194.87 square miles (504.7 km 2) in 2013. [6]
To access St. Mary's Falls Trail, hikers must hike 1.2 miles (1.9 km) along Gold Camp Road to reach the trailhead for the falls themselves. When hikers reach the third tunnel of Gold Camp Road, the trail climbs up over the tunnel and descends into Pike National Forest where it continues for another 1.6 miles (2.6 km) to the base of the falls.
One of the trails is the Edna Mae Bennet Nature trail, [11] a 2.6-mile (4.2 km) trail in the rocky bluffs of the park with views of ravines, canyons, and rock formations. [13] Other noted trails are Templeton Trail and Yucca Flats. [4] There is a dog run, like Bear Creek Dog Park. [14]
Pikes Peak Greenway is a 16-mile (26 km) trail in Colorado Springs, Colorado that parallels Monument and Fountain Creeks and winds through and alongside parks, like Monument Valley Park, and sports complexes. It connects with other trails, such as the Midland Trail, Bear Creek Trail and Templeton Gap Trail.
