On June 18, 1974, after Allen Fryer's trial, he and James Fryer escaped from the Lyon County Jail, stole a vehicle, and fled the state. [14] They were arrested in Gillette, Wyoming, and brought back to face federal charges. [15] James' trial began on December 3, 1974, in Lyon County.
