Irbid (Arabic: إِربِد), known in ancient times as Arabella or Arbela (Άρβηλα in Ancient Greek), is the capital and largest city of Irbid Governorate. It has the second-largest metropolitan population in Jordan after Amman, with a population of around 2,003,800. [3] As a city, Irbid is Jordan's third-largest, after Amman and Zarqa.

During the Iron Age, the region around Irbid, known then as Gilead, was settled by the Israelites. [2] Ar-Ramtha, the second largest city in the Irbid Governorate, [3] is commonly identified with the Israelite city of Ramoth-Gilead, a Levitical city and city of refuge east of the Jordan River, mentioned several times in the Hebrew Bible.
Al-Kourah Department is one of the nine departments that make up Irbid Governorate, in Jordan. It is located in the midwestern section of the governorate and is 25 km from Irbid . The department has an area of 210 km 2 and includes 22 towns and villages with its administrative center at Der Abi Saeed .
It is the largest city in the Bani Kinanah Department and Irbid Governorate in the extreme northwest of the country, near Jordan's borders with Israel and Syria. Today, the site is divided into three main areas: the archaeological site (Gadara), the traditional village (Umm Qais), and the modern town of Umm Qais.

[2]The Arabic definite article al when followed by certain consonants undergoes assimilation to the latter, so that in cases like this, al is sounded ash, also spelled esh, [4] yielding here ash-Shunah/esh-Shuneh.
