Sylvan Shores is an unincorporated community and former census-designated place (CDP) in Highlands County, Florida, United States, located immediately northeast of the town of Lake Placid. As of the 2000 census , the CDP population was 2,424.
Construction began in Sanford in 1885 and its rails passed through Sylvan Lake, Sorrento and Mt. Dora before reaching Tavares, 25.8 miles in 1887. [2] The line was constructed to 4 ft 9 in ( 1,448 mm ) gauge and was immediately leased to the Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railway Company (JT&KW).
On 19 August 2024 the Florida Department of Environmental Protection announced plans [21] to build golf courses and 350-room lodges on state park lands. [22]In statements to the Tampa Bay Times and in posts to social media, the agency claimed that the construction of a golf course on vulnerable scrub habitat will be done in a way to "minimize habitat impacts".
