The cave which now became the temple gateway was founded by a monk from China in 1890 who walked through the area from Ipoh. [1] The monk then decided to make the cave his home and a place for meditation where he remained until the end of his life. This was then continued by other monks and nuns. A temple was then constructed in the 1950s. [1] [2]

The museum building was originally constructed in 1926 as a house for a wealthy tin miner named Foo Choong Kit. [1] In 1950, the house was sold to Perak Government in which it was then used to house the administrative center of the Department of Works [2] It was then opened as a museum in 1992.
