FairyTale: A True Story is a 1997 fantasy drama film directed by Charles Sturridge and produced by Bruce Davey and Wendy Finerman. It is loosely based on the story of the Cottingley Fairies , and follows two children in 1917 England who take a photograph soon believed to be the first scientific evidence of the existence of fairies .
The 1997 films FairyTale: A True Story and Photographing Fairies were inspired by the events surrounding the Cottingley Fairies. [44] The photographs were parodied in a 1994 book written by Terry Jones and Brian Froud, Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book. [45]

Photographing Fairies is a 1997 British fantasy film based on Steve Szilagyi's 1992 novel Photographing Fairies.The film explores some of the themes of folklore, such as possession, paganism, animism, hallucinogens, parapsychology and fairies.
Each story has its feet firmly planted in the real world, but serves as an epicenter for swirling fantasies. In one story, "The Lizzie Borden Jazz Babies," Sparks makes use of a tragic plot point that sets off many classic fairy tales – the untimely death of a protagonist's parent – and applies it to the father instead of the mother.
Since then the films Sturridge has directed have included Runners, A Handful of Dust, Where Angels Fear to Tread, and FairyTale: A True Story, based on the Cottingley Fairies story which won the BAFTA for Best Children's film 1998.
