Canyon Lake began as a master-planned community developed by the Corona Land Company in 1968. The City of Canyon Lake was incorporated on December 1, 1990.
The reservoir is supplied by storm water runoff from the San Jacinto River and Salt Creek. Water from the reservoir feeds the Canyon Lake Water Treatment Plant, which provides approximately 10% of the domestic water supply in the Lake Elsinore and city of Canyon Lake area. Canyon Lake has an average depth of 20 feet (6.1 m).

In the late 1940s the city transportation master plan included building a new north–south freeway, the Laurel Canyon Freeway-SR-170, that would have bisected the Baldwin Hills and park site where La Cienega Boulevard currently crosses the hills. Between 1947 and 1951, the Baldwin Hills Reservoir was built here.
