Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, its population was 228,954, making it the seventh-most populous county in Alabama. [2] Its county seat is Montgomery, the state capital. [3] Montgomery County is included in the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Some Alabama municipalities issued their own license plates for horse-drawn vehicles as well as automobiles prior to 1911. The earliest known plate is a bronze plate, "No. 1", issued by the city of Bessemer on a two-horse wagon in 1901, while the earliest known plate for an automobile is a 1906 dash plate [1] issued by the city of Birmingham, originally assigned to a 1904 6-cylinder Ford. [1]
The largest county is Baldwin (1,590 sq mi, 4,118 km 2) and the smallest is Etowah (535 sq mi, 1,386 km 2). [8] The Constitution of Alabama requires that any new county in Alabama cover at least 600 square miles (1,600 km 2) in area, effectively limiting the creation of new counties in the state. [9]

The Alabama State Bar is headquartered at 415 Dexter Avenue in Montgomery. In 1964, pledges and donations by bar members made for a debt-free bar headquarters building with paid-for furnishings. The original building contained six offices, a library, an assembly room, and a membership file room, plus a print shop added in 1969.

[8] Sam Houston , the President of the Republic of Texas when the town and county of Montgomery were founded, served in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend with Lemuel P. Montgomery, and witnessed his death in the front lines of the battle. [ 9 ]
