Asian carp is an informal grouping of several species of cyprinid freshwater fishes native to Eurasia, commonly referring to the four East Asian species silver carp, bighead carp, grass carp (a.k.a. white amur) and black carp (a.k.a. black amur), [note 1] which were introduced to North America during the 1970s and now regarded as invasive in the United States.

The major carp species used traditionally in Chinese aquaculture are the black, grass, silver and bighead carp. In the 1950s, the Pearl River Fishery Research Institute of CAFS made a technological breakthrough in the induced breeding of these carps, which has resulted in a rapid expansion of freshwater aquaculture in China. Carp in particular can stir up sediment, reducing the clarity of the water and making plant growth difficult. [13] [14] In America and Australia, such as the Asian carp in the Mississippi Basin, they have become invasive species that compete with native fishes or disrupt the environment.
Cyprinus are closely related to some more barb-like genera, such as Cyclocheilichthys and Barbonymus (tinfoils). The crucian carps of western Eurasia, which include the goldfish (C. auratus), are apparently not as closely related. [2] This genus's most widespread and well-known member is the common carp (C. carpio) species complex.
