The Washington County Courthouse is a government building in central Nashville, the county seat of Washington County, Illinois, United States. It is the fourth building to serve as the courthouse for Washington County, having been built in 1884 after the previous courthouse was destroyed by fire.
Also in 1893 the Board of County Commissioners for Spokane County held a design contest, soliciting plans for a fire-proof masonry building that could be constructed for no more than $250,000. Twenty-nine-year-old architect Willis A. Ritchie's submission was selected, and Ritchie was awarded 5% of the cost of construction.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,781 sq mi (4,610 km 2), of which 17 square miles (44 km 2) (0.9%) are covered by water. [18] The lowest point in the county is the Spokane River behind Long Lake Dam (boundary of Stevens County) at 1,538 feet (469 m) above sea level.
