At the age of 17, Luffy sets sail from the East Blue Sea to the Grand Line in search of the legendary treasure, One Piece, to succeed Gol D. Roger as "King of the Pirates".
A battle begins between him and Luffy as he tries to figure out where exactly he left the map. At one point, Buggy puts Luffy in a tank of seawater in the hopes that he will reveal the map's location.
Ace dies from his injuries. Luffy is devastated by the loss and the pirates, having failed to rescue Ace, flee. Whitebeard tries to avenge Ace, but he is killed by Blackbeard and his own crew of Impel Down escapees. Blackbeard absorbs Whitebeard's ability to create earthquakes and uses it to lay waste to Marine Headquarters.
