Chosen solution. This is a side effect of the SearchMe extension, which apparently is bundled with some popular torrent software. You can disable that extension, then restart Firefox and choose your preferred home page again. You'll do that here: Tools menu > Add-ons > in the left column, click Extensions.

I use Frontier.com email. When I ask for it, Firefox replies that it can't establish a connection to the server at www.webmail.frontier.com . I have previously used Firefox with no problems.
Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems. "Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
