Sec. Simon’s Statement on State Flag. December 19, 2023. SAINT PAUL – At the December 19, 2023 meeting of the State Emblem Redesign Commission, members approved a state flag design that features the conceptual shape of Minnesota in dark blue and the rest of the flag in light blue.
The Minnesota State Flag represents many of the state’s best-known traits including its many lakes and rivers and the North Star. On its left side, the flag contains a dark blue background with a white, 8-point star.
The Norway Pine was adopted as the state tree in 1953. The red or Norway pine (Pinus resinosa) became the official state tree in 1953. Red pines are tall, stately trees that reach heights of 60 to nearly 150 feet. Their trunks are straight and uniform and may grow to five feet in diameter.
