Salisbury House of Canada Ltd. is a restaurant chain based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Known locally as "Sals", the chain is considered a Winnipeg institution. The first Salisbury House restaurant was founded in downtown Winnipeg in 1931 by Ralph Erwin (September 2, 1902 – June 5, 1983), [2] who named the venture after the salisbury steak.
It continues to the Main Street Bridge over the Assiniboine River, where it enters downtown and becomes Main Street. After passing through downtown, it runs along the west bank of the Red River to its northern terminus at the Winnipeg city limits, just south of the north Perimeter Highway (Manitoba Highway 101), and becomes Manitoba Highway 9 .
On 13 August 1981, Portage and Main was the place where Dale Hawerchuk signed his contract with the Winnipeg Jets and later was the location of the "Save the Jets" rallies in 1995 and 1996. [ 10 ] In 2016, with the deal to close the intersection set to expire, city officials were contemplating re-opening of the intersection to pedestrians. [ 11 ]
