I just finished a game using pixel art for the first time, and I used a combination of aseprite and Photoshop. Aseprite was really great for pixel work, easy use of palettes, and especially for animation with sprite sheets. I think there are also maybe some tile mapping tools I didn't get the chance to check out.

I atarted experimenting with Pixel art about 6 months ago and Aseprite has been my fave, too. Have tried a few programs and it's just a well thought out interface with some really nice features that streamline some things like tile maps.
