Gonna put my 2c in. If it has snowed, Belleayre has my favorite natural terrain: the short but fun Big T glade, the dreamcatcher glade, all the damn glades, and the crown: Cathedral Brook. Combine all these things with a Tuesday and its as good as you can get south of bigger mountains.
If/when you visit Belleayre, drive SLOWLY when leaving the mountain. I was warned and still didn’t drive slowly enough and sure enough got sniped coasting on a long, straight, downhill freeway driving home after a day on the mountain. Only time I’ve been pulled over in about a decade, I wasn’t even 10mph over the limit, and still got a ...
Quite a treat: bluebird day, mountain was great, easily enough to keep you entertained for a day, the singles lines were moving pretty quickly in general. Loved it and will be back soon Was doing some digging on the internet about the mountain and came across the former Highmount ski area.
If you are enjoying the Tomahawk side (riders left, lookers right) of the mountain, you may want to just lap the slower quad. Lower deer run is mostly just a run out just to get to the gondola and not fun, unless there is fresh snow and then the trees on the right can be fun, or you need to warm up for a minute.
The greens are all concentrated at the bottom of the mountain. At the top the blues are at the far left and far right of the mountain and are beginner friendly. If you take the gondala go right when you get off, if you take the super chief go left.
But before I go west coast I’m probably going to visit mt snow and master that mountain first, like you first brought up the difficulty of a black diamond varies mountain to mountain, a black diamond at the places I’ve been to is around a blue square at a place like mt. Snow, but once I adapt to the standards of a black diamond at a more ...
Both would be great for weekdays. Hunter is cheaper. Belleayre and plattekill are my local mountains so often I’ll bop over there for some turns. Platty has great terrain when there’s good snow but it can get a bit old. Unless there’s a “snow day” they only sell tickets for Friday and weekends. Belleayre sells out fast on weekends.
Agreed on Overlook and Belleayre in general. I’ve taught two kids to ski there, and they know what skiing was like when I was a kid because Belleayre is like a time capsule (in a good way). If this had happened around 4:00 on any non-pandemic year, I would have been sitting in that room struggling to take my boots off, right in the path of ...
I think Belleayre skis better, though what steeps they have are shorter. Belleayre's trails are all pretty similar, with the exception of trails looker's right of Tomahawk quad. High speed Dot Nebel turns are hard to beat. Area lodging options overlap. Hunter has on-mountain options, Belleayre does not. If you're skiing Sat/Sun then ski one each.
I was there yesterday (Sunday) it was sold out. Gondola had a less than 10-minute wait, Belleayre Lift (aka Super Chief) was more like 15. Tomahawk and the lift by the Overlook lodge were ski on all day. Best bet to avoid crowds is park at lot E or F and utilize the Tomahawk lift.
