The Oude IJssel (Dutch, pronounced [ˌʌudə ˈʔɛisəl], literally old IJssel) or Issel (German, pronounced) is a river in Germany and the Netherlands approximately 82 km (51 mi) long. It is a right tributary of the river IJssel .
The Oude IJssel is the second-largest contributor to the flow of the river, after the Rhine. The source of the Oude IJssel is near Borken in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany. First it flows south-west until it nearly reaches the Rhine near Wesel ; then it turns west northwest .
The municipality of Oude IJsselstreek is considered to be divided into three units. The centres along the river Oude IJssel (Ulft, Gendringen, Etten on the left border, Silvolde and Terborg on the right) constitute the urban belt, Varsseveld in the east of the municipality is a rural village and the other centres are the external territories.
